Biblical notes on God’s Sovereignty

Eph. 1:11 – In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the councel of His own will,
PSA. 103:19 – The LORD hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.

The doctrine of God’s sovereignty is commonly rejected nowadays by many professing Christians because of the world’s acceptance of the doctrine of man’s free will. The teachings that putting man’s future and salvation into his own decision or will is more agreeable and admirable to the world than accepting the truth that all things are under the will of God (James 4:14–15) and all things happen and move according to the predetermined plans of God. Accepting that God is in control and that God rules infinitely is truly a magnifying and glorifying truth for God, and it gives comfort to every child of God. Why? Because evil may rise and the world may have gone farther from godliness, but a child of God knows that he/she is safe in the hands of the Sovereign Creator and that all things work together for good to them that love God (Rom. 8:28).

This study is an exposition primarily through the presentation of biblical text. Although this biblical subject of God’s sovereignty may take hours or days to study, it has been exposed in the past by many forefathers of the faith. But here the writer is not claiming authorship but only to make it simple and brief as long as the reader uses the Holy Scriptures in searching for biblical truths. This is the fundamental basis of this subject because God is the only true author of His own doctrines. I am hoping that this may also be used as a guide for every Bible teacher who aims to glorify God through His words. May God bless you.

Sovereignty may define as: effectual and absolute control, govern, power, dominion, rule, and supremacy.

Notes: WHY SALVATION IS A PRESENT POSSESSION ?

Bro. Junrey J. Moncada

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV-1John 5:10-13)

We come to study about salvation in the present possession because of some professing Christians today do not believe in such notion, that man may received eternal life or presently obtained salvation in this life. According to them salvation has not yet given, eternal life has yet received because people dies. Many non-catholics seemingly think that salvation is the resurrection of the body and be with Christ, but to the Catholics salvation maybe obtain by becoming members of the church, Baptism, indulgences, Eucharist and other ceremonies but that salvation hasn’t yet receive presently until man died, and also those who died in vices and unrepentant maybe save through repetitions of prayers of the living. They have their various interpretation of the scriptures but those who cannot believe that Salvation is a present possession are believers of salvation in cooperation with God and man. Notwithstanding of many Scriptural proofs we read from. Thus we have this study to answer a question, why salvation is a present possession?

1. Present possession of salvation is not a bodily salvation but it is a present possession in the body which is the soul of man.

1 Peter 1:9-Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
James 1:21-Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
Hebrews 10:39-But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

°Apostle Paul used the term inward man and inner man

2 Corinthians 4:16-For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the INWARD MAN is renewed day by day.
Ephesians 3:16-That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the INNER MAN;

°Apostle Peter also described the incorruptible hidden man.

1Peter 3:4-But let it be the HIDDEN MAN of the heart, in that which is NOT CORRUPTIBLE, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

2. Salvation was purposed by God from eternity past to be presently obtain by man.

Notice these verses;

2Corinthians 6:2-(For HE saith, I have heard thee in a TIME ACCEPTED, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, NOW is the ACCEPTED Time; behold, NOW is the day of salvation.)
2 Timothy 1:9-Who hath SAVED us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus BEFORE the world began,
2 Thessalonians 2:13-But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath FROM THE BEGINNING CHOSEN YOU TO SALVATION through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth
Romans 11:5-Even so then at this PRESENT TIME also there is a remnant according to the Election of GRACE..
Ephesians 1:4-5-According as he hath chosen us in him BEFORE the foundation of the world, that we should BE HOLY and without blame before him in love: Having PREDESTINATED us unto the ADOPTION of CHILDREN by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
2 Timothy 2:10-Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

3. Salvation is a present possession because we presently believed Christ and believing Christ will result to an assurance of Salvation through Christ.

Consider these passages:

John 3:18,36
[18]He that believeth on HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [36]He that BELIEVETH ON THE SON HATH EVERLASTING LIFE: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 5:24-Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and BELIEVETH on HIM that sent me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Romans 8:1-There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

1 John 5:10-13
[10]He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.[11]And this is the record, that God hath given to us ETERNAL LIFE, and this LIFE is IN His SON.[12]He that HATH the SON HATH Life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.[13]These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

°We learned from these passages that by believing in Christ is an assurance of Salvation or in other words having an eternal life presently in our souls, and the reason behind why there are people who believed and shall believe is because they were already ordained to eternal life.

Acts 13:48 -And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as WERE ORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE BELIEVED.

John 6:37-All that the Father GIVETH me SHALL COME TO ME; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

John 17:2-As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that HE should give eternal life to AS MANY as thou hast GIVEN him.

4. Salvation is a present possession because we are presently called Children of God.

• Those who are presently born spiritually by God that causing them to received and believed Christ are now called Children of God Presently.

John 1:12-13 – But as many as RECEIVED him, to them gave he power to become the SONS of God, even to them that BELIEVE on his name:Which were BORN, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, BUT OF GOD.

• There are people who are predestinated to become children of God through adoption by Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 1:5 – Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.

• Presently we are called Children of God by the Holy Spirit who bear witness to our spirit that we children of God and are joint-heirs with Christ.

Romans 8:16-17 – The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Remember not all men are children of God, satan has his children too and those are who refused and continue to rebelling against God.

Remember not all men are children of God, satan has his children too and those are who refused and continue to rebelling against God.

John 8:44-47 – Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

Authority: From God to Church

Bro. Junrey J. Moncada
Pastor- Berea Baptist Church, Caburan Big, Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental Philippines

“And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority”(Matthew 21:23)
” For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch”.(Mark 13:34).

Authority is vital thing that really matters especially in distinguishing who are the false and who are those rightful persons that are in authority or power to implement and deliver works or orders. A law is obeyed, an order is implemented, a work is honoured when it is done with persons in authority. A medical doctor cannot practice medicine if he had no authority received from the Government institution, a police officer cannot impose and implement the law without the authority or else they are just but a mere impostor and false claimer having no authority vested upon them. Authority is an important thing most especially in religious matters, as to establish mission works and organize churches, having no authority from the existing church whose progeny from Christ making a church a false church, a competition from the true church built by Christ.

Thus we have this study concerning the church authority in order for us to know how important it is in our spiritual service because God receives glory only from his church and no other (Eph. 1:21).

Authority defined

Definition of the Term Authority.
Merriam Webster Dictionary- The power to give orders or make decisions: the power or right to direct or control someone or something.
Strong’s Greek Dictionary- “ EXOUSIA”- ejxousi>a, — ex-oo-see’-ah; from (1832) (e]xesti) (in the sense of ability); privilege, i.e. (subject) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (object) mastery (concrete magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: — authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

Having an Authority means:
Being independent or not dependent or self-govern or management, autonomy, freedom from interference in external and internal affairs, that no one dictates nor question.
Control or right to rule oneself
God is the Greatest example who has the authority over all His creation (Romans 9:21)

Source of Authority

The source of Authority is God whether it be secular or religious matters (John 3:27; 19:9-10). But the authority that has been given from God are two types :

1. The Personal Authority- it is an authority given by God to a person, may it be a direct authority or through to an authority of an Institution like: King, President, Doctor, Police officer, (Dan.4:17).

In spiritual matters especially in salvation of our souls, Christ Jesus was given the direct authority from the Father to be the Saviour of all the Father’s has given to Him (John 17:2 cf. 14:6; Acts 4:10-12). That shows that no one and nothing that has the authority to save but Christ alone, not us, not our works of righteousness, not our will, not to the authorized preacher, not Baptism, nor the church.

John the Baptist was also an example who received a especial personal Authority, who was given a direct personal authority to preach and to Baptize from God (Jn. 1:6,33; Acts 19:4)

2. The Institutional Authority – it is an authority given by God to a group of men, or nation, or institution like: Government Constitution, Kingdom, Judicial court and etc..
In the sense of spiritual institutional authority it was and is only given to the Church built by Christ (to be study below). (Psa. 22:28; Romans 13:1-2)

The first church at Jerusalem has received authority directly from Christ (Matt.28:18;Lk 24:33), but the authority received of the Church of Samaria and the Church of Antioch was not coming directly from God or from Christ but from the existing Church of Jerusalem (Acts 8:6-14; 11:19-27).Churches that was organized under the missionary journeys of apostle Paul has received their authority coming from the existing church, the Church of Antioch (Acts 13:1-3; 14:26-27). Therefore the first church at Jerusalem received their authority vertically from Christ but the progeny of this church including these present day churches received authority horizontally from the existing church/churches whose history traced back from the church established before at Jerusalem. So to start a new church without authority from the existing church is unscriptural and much worst a man-made church for they are not of Christ’s ownership, no link to the first church established by Christ. Apostate churches are no longer qualified to Christ (2 Jn.9; Rev.2:5; 3:16).

Authority of Christ

Christ received His authority from the Father and so He has the authority in:
-all things in heaven and in earth (Matt. 28:18 as He is the King of kings and LORD of lords Rev.19:16)
-His own life (Jn. 10:18)
-Salvation of all God’s elect as already stated above 👆
-Execution during the Judgment day (Jn. 5:27)
-All demons (Mk. 1:27; Lk. 9:1)
-Teaching God’s doctrines (Mk.1:22; Jn. 7:16-17; 12:49-50; 2Jn.9)
-His own church as He purchased her by His own blood (Acts 20:28)
-The church as His wife (2Cor. 11:2; Eph. 5:22-24), as He is the head of His church (Col.1:18 like man to woman 1Cor. 11:3).

Christ gave authority to His church
(Matt. 28:18-20 cf. Jn. 20:21; 2Cor.10:8, Mk.13:34)
To teach all nations
To preach
To Baptize
To observe all things that He Commanded (These includes all practices, customs, and managements in the church)

Church Authority

When the Bible speaks of authority of the Church that means that the church must be govern by the church itself. Christ did not gave authority to the apostles alone but to the whole church, compare Matthew 28 and Luke 24, you found that they were in the same instanced when Christ gave authority to the church as it said that not only the apostles were present at that time but they had many companions Luke24:33. In other words having an association, convention, boards, mission boards, or league of elders and etc., to govern the church in carrying the Lord’s work is unscriptural, Christ said “tell it to the church”(Matt. 18:17), He never told “tell it to the Apostles, elders, association, convention and so on”.

During the days of the Apostles the New Testament churches has shown an example to us on how they manage the church through the church itself.
>The selection of Matthias (Acts 1:23-26)
>The selection of seven deacons (Acts 6:2-3)
>Setting apart and sending out missionaries (Acts 11:22; 13:1-3)
>Reporting of Accomplishments (Acts 14:26-27)
>Resolving church problems (Acts 15:1-6;22-29)
>Exclusion and restoration of incestuous man (1Cor.5; 2Cor.2:6)
>The selection of travelling companions of Paul (1Cor.16:3 cf. 2Cor.8:19,23)
>The duty and responsibility of the whole church to-
>Maintain unity of action (Rom. 12:16; 1Cor.1:10; 2Cor.13:4; Eph.4:3. Phil.1:27, 1Pet.3:8
>Preserve pure doctrines and practices (1Tim.3:15, Jude 3; see also Rev. 2 & 3)
>Guard the ordinances (1Cor.11:2, 23-24).

The authority given by Christ to his church can only be perform by an existing, living, local and visible body of believers, Universal Invisible Church cannot perform those things authorized by Christ for all things mention are seen and heard that cannot be applied nor exercise of the non-existing invisible universal church!

A church institution that has a genuine authority received, will authorize persons to carry the work of the Lord. And to speak out as having an authority inside the church, it is given only to men, to oversee, teach, preach or manage the church, women are forbidden( 1Tim.2:11-12, 1Cor. 14:34-37) even in public prayers we are instructed that godly men are to lead, and not child not woman(1Tim2:8). Except for unbelieving people outside the church and only women are the true believers only then she can lead those who are dead in the spirit or babes in Christ.

It is said that women will have their authority when wearing Head Covering inside the Church, by citing (1Cor.11:10), but it is not to understand woman will have her authority when covered but that only means that she is in submission under the authority of her husband, of men, or of angels verse 3,7-9 cleared it.

Chain of Grace

Romans8:28“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.30.Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called:and whom he called, them he also justified:and whom he justified, them he also glorified”

.1.FOREKNOWLEDGE-

>is the basis of God’s election to salvation from eternity past (1 Peter 1:2); however, God’s foreknowledge is preceded by His predetermined purpose. Acts 15:18 says KNOWN unto God are all HIS WORKS from the beginning of the world. Added to this text are Acts 2:23; 4:26–28; and 1 Peter 1:18–29.

>is not the prescience of the person’s beliefs and work in the future. God sees men as detestable, depraved sinners (Psa. 14:2; 143:2). It is the foreknowledge of persons as the subject of His divine love. (2 Tim. 2:19; John 10:27; Rom. 11:2)

meaning that God, from eternity past, at the beginning of His creation, has planned and purposed all things that may come to pass from the beginning to the end (Isa. 46:9-10; Eph. 1:11); every season and time according to every purpose (Eccl. 3:1-11); and all those things pre-planned by God can never be thwarted or overthrown by men (Isa. 14:24, 27; Dan. 4:34) because only God knows all of those things (Deute.29:29 ; James 4:13-15). God’s creations are all recipients of all His plans; we are all the characters of God’s majestic composition; history is His story (Jer. 10:23; Psa. 1:6; 4:3).

>Is the manifestation of the love of God towards unworthy sinners(Jer.31:3; Eph.1:4-5; 1John4:19; cf. Jer.1:5; John10:27; Amos3:2; Nahum1:7; 2Tim.2:19).

Like Adam expressed his loved to Eve,“Adam KNEW his wife”(Gen.4:1). Its implied that those who are knew by God are His loved from the beginning ( Eph.1:4-5, 2Thess.2:13, 2Tim.2:19, 1Jn.4:19) and those who are not known are not His (Matt.7:23;John8:44,47, 10:27).

2.PREDESTINATION-

*Maybe defined as the purpose of God from eternity pertaining to the future accomplished according to Him who works all things (Eph. 1:11).

Is the eternal determination or purpose of God’s divine will something that has happened, is happening, and will be fulfilled in unaltered and unchanging ways as what God predetermined.

Is the pre-determined purposed of God for the elect and non-elect towards future and that would be executed as Providence of God in:

•Disposition of human life(Psa.139:16;Job23:13-14;1Sam.2:6)

•Living as an elect(Rom.8:29;Eph.1:4;2:10)

•Living as a non-elect(Job21:7;1Pet.2:8)

•Salvation and Condemnation of men(Rom.8:28-30;9:11-24;2Thess.2:13-14;Acts13:48/2Thess.2:11-12;Jude4)

3.CALLING/EFFECTUALCALL-

There are two types of calling in the Bible;

A. the General call which to be done by preaching through God’s word- this calling is resistible by men(Matt.13:13,John8:46-47,

B. the Inward call which the working of the power of God to the sinners- this is irresistible by men(Psa.110.3;1Thess.1:4-6;1Pet.2:9) as God works to the heart of a sinner through the means preaching His words ( Rom. 10:10,17 , 2Thess.2:13-14 compare Acts 16:14, Ezek. 36:26-27).

The Effectual call of God is the result of God’s foreordination from eternity past.(Isa.43:7;45:4-5;49:1;Jer.1:5;31:3;Rom.9:11;Gal.1:15;2Tim.1:9;Acts13:48;Nahum1:7cf.John6:37,44-45;Luke5:32)

4.JUSTIFICATION-

•Is the work of God(Rom.8:33-34)

•Is only found in Christ through the shedding of His precious blood(Isa.53:11;Rom.3:24-26;4:25;5:1,9;Tit.3:5-7)

•Can only be obtain through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ(Acts13:39;Rom.3:23,25-28;4:16;5:1,9;2Cor.5:21;Gal.2:16-20;3:11,24), those who justify themselves to obtain salvation are fallen from Grace(Gal.5:4),

•Having true faith that wrought by God in the heart and is manifested by working it out (Phil.2:12-13), faith is made perfect through works(Jas.2:18,22,26), salvation is through faith alone and not of faith and works because works is the product of faith inside from the heart(Ezek.36:26-28;Gal.5:6), as it was ordained by God that we should walk in them(Eph.2:10).

•Is Foreordained by God(1Pet.1:2;18-20 cf.Gal.3:8).

5.GLORIFICATION-

Is God’s work(Phil.1:6)

Is the state of which the forgiven sinners will be transform into sinless perfection in the new incorruptible body with the Lord in glory (Rom.8:23;2Cor.5:1-6;1Cor.15:51-56.

Is predetermined by God(Rom.8:30;9:23;Matt.25:34)
